The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced on Friday that it will offer tax relief to North Carolina residents and businesses impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.

Those affected now have until February 3, 2025, to file various federal tax returns and make payments.

This extension comes after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared the storm a disaster. People and businesses in the following counties are eligible: Alamance, Alleghany, Anson, Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Cabarrus, Camden, Carteret, Caswell, Chatham, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Davie, Davidson, Duplin, Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Greene, Guilford, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Hoke, Hyde, Iredell, Johnston, Jones, Lee, Lenoir, Martin, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Orange, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Person, Pitt, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rockingham, Rowan, Sampson, Scotland, Stanly, Stokes, Surry, Tyrrell, Union, Vance, Wake, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Wilkes, Wilson, and Yadkin.

The IRS has postponed certain tax-filing and payment deadlines for those in the disaster area. Any deadlines between August 5, 2024, and February 3, 2025, are extended to February 3, 2025.

This new deadline applies to:

  • Individuals who filed for an extension on their 2023 tax returns (Note: the relief does not extend to payments due).
  • Businesses, including partnerships and S corporations, with original or extended deadlines, like those whose 2023 extensions end on September 16, or corporations with extensions ending on October 15.
  • Any payments due during this time, such as quarterly estimated tax payments on September 16 and January 15, and quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on October 31 and January 31.

The IRS will automatically apply this relief to taxpayers in the disaster area. If you live or have a business outside the covered area but were affected, you can request relief by calling the IRS disaster hotline at (866) 562-5227. Tax preparers with clients outside the disaster area can use the bulk request option for disaster relief.
